MUSIC IN THE UNCANNY VALLEY
Kenna Burima
From the book "Ascenti: Humans Opening to AI"
"A song must be coaxed and nurtured in an organic dance of waiting and doing. By immersing myself in the craft of songwriting, I have nurtured a deep understanding of what a song can be, and how it can be brought into being.
So, my fear is that AI will fuck it all up."
Kenna writes, teaches, and plays songs in Moh’kinsstis on Treaty 7 land. She is dedicated to raising her young daughter, turning ideas into big projects, teaching the unteachable and empowering people to change the world around them by engaging in a personal artistic practice. Her third album While She Sleeps, released in the spring of 2023, is available now in printed songbook and audio on streaming platforms everywhere.
“The cultural and artistic roles of AI have received little attention so far. The Ascenti book is a welcome opening in that direction. It deals with AI used in creating visual arts, literature, and computer games, and analyzes both the new opportunities and limitations in these areas.” —Frans Mäyrä, PhD, Researcher of Culture and Society
